Stop Sex Trafficking.  What You Can Do!

January 11 is the National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness.

The historic Wilberforce Act increases penalties against traffickers; expands protections for trafficking victims; requires the Justice Department to produce a model law for states to use in investigating and prosecuting trafficking; provides federal law enforcement greater authority to prosecute trafficking cases; and clarifies that the law cannot be interpreted to say that prostitution is a valid form of employment.

Womens Opportunity Award — This program is Soroptimists major service project and aids women seeking to improve their economic status by gaining additional skills, training and education. The program helps women who, as the primary wage-earners for their families, must enter or return to the work force. The women may use the awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education; including books, child care and car fare. Many Womens Opportunity Awards winners are domestic abuse survivors who use the funds to help rebuild their lives through improved employment opportunities. Each year, more than $800,000 is awarded through the Womens Opportunity Awards program.

Violet Richardson Award -  The Violet Richardson Award is a recognition program for young women ages 14-17 engaged in volunteer action within their communities or schools. It is given to young women whose volunteer activities make the community and world a better place. The award is in honor of the president of the first Soroptimist club, Violet Richardson, a woman of action, whose indomitable spirit and sense of personal responsibility were demonstrated by her lifelong commitment to volunteering in her community. All awards are given for activities conducted on a volunteer basis.  Projects that benefit women or girls are especially valued.
